When I was young reading comics was not the “nerdy” thing to do it was the “normal” thing to do. I have been reading comics since the ’60s, started programming computers in 1973, watched every superhero movie made, and I own multiple electronic tools. I have movie posters for all black superhero movie including Blankman, Meteor Man and Hancock. Hundreds of comic books featuring Black Characters including 1st issue of many current superheroes. The collection contains 80+ action figures. I teach Computer Science in high school.
I started reading comics in 1964 – 2 years before Black Panther was introduced in the FF4 #52. From the age of 4 or 5 when I started to watch TV I saw 0 people that looked like me until Bill Cosby starred in I Spy in 1965 – I was 8. The story was similar on the Big Screen I had 0 heroes that looked like me. I didn’t see any characters that were heroes and looked like me until I was a teenager – the greatest period of Black Hero movies the 1970s. It was the 1st time in 8-9 years of watching movies I saw anyone other than white people win – I was in high school. I the world of Comic Books, I did have Gabe Jones and Jackie Johnson because I read Sgt Fury and Sgt Rock.
When Black Panther showed up in my Fantastic Four comic I was surprised and excited. It was one of the few comics I allowed my friends to borrow because I normally did not loan out my comic books. Just like the movies there was a flood of Black Superheroes that appeared during the 1970s. There were around 50 characters created. I have watched the ebb and flow of Black Characters in comic books over the past 50+ years which gives me a different perspective of the comic book industry than many of current comic book readers.
That is why I started the OBN Collection Travelling Exhibits. My goals are simple:
Change The World Of A Child and It Will Change YOU!!!
Hi, everyone calls me Coach Tully. One of the goals of OBN is to generate new comic book readers. My 40+ year wide and varied involvement with community-based programs particularly sports programs gives me a keen insight into the segment of the population that will be very receptive to the type of entertainment offered by comic books – athletes. My unique perspective is bolstered because I coach girls and boys. I have also been involved in policy development for recreation and community programs. My job is to craft a message that comics are Fun, Easy to Read and Entertaining.
That’s All I Have To Say About That – Period 🙂
Hello, Mr. Sullivan here. One of the goals of OBN is to promote the benefits of using comic books in an educational environment.
I have been involved in the public education system for over 10 years in a variety of teaching positions as a long-term substitute teacher. At 60, I decided to become a full-time high school teacher. Currently, I teach Business Education and Computer Science. My educational adventure has taken into classrooms for every grade K-12 thru many subjects – English, Chemistry, Business, Computer Science, Technology ED and Physical ED. The journey has allowed me to meet educators from across the spectrum.
I learned that the material must be relatable and relevant for the students to learn. My job is to make the Collection – Informative, Enlightening and Relevant.
Every Day is A New Adventure
Hey There, OBN – The Original Black Nerd.
My 1st desktop computer had 128 KB of RAM, a double-sided floppy disk drive, a 10 MB hard drive and a microprocessor running at 4.77 MHz. If you are into computers, you are thinking “Wowww”.
At one point I had an AOL email address and a Myspace page. If you are a current online user, you are thinking “You are OLD”.
I have owned a pager, two-way pager, car phone, transportable phone and cell phones from Motorola Microtac 9800Xr to Apple Iphone 8+. You should be thinking “That’s why he is the Original”.
We are an Online Museum with travelling exhibits. It is particularly important that our online presence support OBN’s goal of generating interest in potential new comic book readers.
My job is to make the Collection’s online presence is visually stimulating, user responsive and consistent on all platforms.
