1990 – Silhouette AKA Silhouette Chord

1990 - Midnights Fire AKA Andrew Chord

Silhouette first appeared in New Warriors #2 (August 1990) and was created by Fabian Nicieza and Mark Bagley. She is the daughter of Andrew Chord, a former soldier who was part of a recon patrol that stumbled upon an ancient temple of a cult called the Dragon’s Breath in Cambodia during the Vietnam War. The cult had access to a mystical energy source called the Well of All Things, and they wanted to breed a superior race that could harness its power. The patrol members were chosen to be the fathers of these children, and Andrew Chord married Miyami, the daughter of Tai, the cult leader.

Silhouette and her brother Aaron, known as Midnight’s Fire, inherited their mother’s mutant genes and gained magical powers from the Well of All Things. They could manipulate the Darkforce, a dimension of negative energy that can be used for various effects. The silhouette could use to teleport through shadows, create shadow tendrils, and become intangible. She also had enhanced strength, speed, agility, and martial arts skills.

Silhouette and Midnight’s Fire grew up in New York City, where they became vigilantes fighting against street gangs. They met Dwayne Taylor, who would later become Night Thrasher and teamed up with him to take down crime. Silhouette also developed a romantic relationship with Dwayne. However, their partnership ended tragically when Silhouette was shot by police gunfire and paralyzed from the waist down during a sting operation gone wrong. Midnight’s Fire blamed Dwayne for her injury and turned into a cop killer and drug lord to lure him into a deadly confrontation.

Silhouette eventually reunited with Dwayne, who had formed a team of young superheroes called the New Warriors. She joined the team as an unofficial member, using crutches or a modified wheelchair. She also learned that her father and grandmother, Tai were behind the plot that led to her paralysis as part of their plan to gain control of the Well of All Things. Tai had also gathered other children of the recon patrol into a group called the Folding Circle, who had similar powers to Silhouette and Midnight’s Fire. The Folding Circle clashed with the New Warriors over the fate of the Well of All Things, which resulted in Tai’s apparent death and the sealing of the Well.

Silhouette continued to be a part of the New Warriors’ adventures, often acting as a moral compass and a mediator for the team. She also helped Night Thrasher deal with his issues, such as guilt over his parent’s death and his quest for revenge. She also faced her brother Midnight’s Fire several times, trying to redeem him from his criminal path.

Some of the little-known facts about Silhouette are:

– Her real name is Janelle Chord, but she legally changed it from Silhouette Chord. Silhouette is the English translation of her Cambodian name Roubpheap Sramol.
– She has a tattoo of a dragon on her left shoulder blade, which is a symbol of her connection to the Dragon’s Breath cult.
– She has appeared in other media besides comics, such as the video game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (2009), where she is a non-playable character who helps the player during the Civil War storyline.
– She has a family history that ties her to other Marvel characters, such as Iron Fist (also descended from the Dragon’s Breath cult) and Night Thrasher (her adoptive cousin).
