1972 - Misty Knight

1972 Misty Knight 1st appearance

Misty Knight first appeared as an unnamed woman saved from muggers by Spider-Man and Human Torch on Christmas Eve in Marvel Team-Up #1 (1972). She later met Iron Fist in Marvel Premiere #21 (1975) after he returned to New York from the mystical city of K’un-Lun. She was introduced as a friend of Colleen Wing, a fellow martial artist and daughter of a professor who the villainous Steel Serpent kidnaped. Misty helped Iron Fist rescue Colleen and her father, and the four formed a close friendship.

Misty revealed she was a former police officer who lost her right arm in a bomb attack while on duty. She resigned from the force but was given a bionic arm by Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, who admired her courage and heroism. The arm gave her superhuman strength and durability and the ability to fire concussive blasts and manipulate magnetic fields. Misty used her new arm and her skills as a detective and fighter to start a private-investigation agency with Colleen called Knightwing Restorations Ltd. The two women also became known as the Daughters of the Dragon, a nickname given to them by Iron Fist’s enemy Davos.

As the Daughters of the Dragon, Misty, and Colleen took on various cases involving crime, corruption, and supernatural threats. They often worked with Iron Fist and Luke Cage, aka Power Man, who also ran their hero-for-hire business. They became close allies and friends, fighting against enemies such as the Wrecking Crew, Bushmaster, Sabretooth, Nightshade, Constrictor, Master Khan, and John Lumus.

Misty also developed a romantic relationship with Iron Fist, who was attracted to her strength and independence. They had one of the first interracial kisses between superheroes in mainstream comics in Marvel Team-Up #64 (1977). However, their relationship was not without challenges, as they had to deal with Iron Fist’s complicated past in K’un-Lun, his involvement with other women, such as Misty’s friend Jade (who turned out to be a spy for Master Khan), and his apparent death at the hands of Captain Hero in Power Man and Iron Fist #125 (1986).

Misty was devastated by Iron Fist’s death but continued to work as a detective and a hero. She joined forces with Luke Cage, who had also lost his partner and friend. They reformed the Heroes for Hire, a team of mercenaries that offered their services to anyone who could afford them. They recruited other heroes such as Black Knight, Hercules, Ant-Man, White Tiger, Paladin, Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Falcon, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Elektra, Deadpool, and Misty’s old partner Rafael Scarfe (who later betrayed them).

The Heroes for Hire were involved in many adventures and conflicts, such as fighting against the Secret Empire during the Acts of Vengeance crossover event; battling against Super-Skrulls during the Infinity War; protecting Wakanda from invaders during the Doomwar; helping Spider-Man against Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers; opposing the Superhuman Registration Act during the Civil War; hunting down Skrulls during the Secret Invasion; fighting against Shadowland’s ninjas during Daredevil’s dark reign; and resisting Hydra’s takeover during Secret Empire.

Misty was overjoyed when she learned that Iron Fist was alive after all. He had been replaced by an impostor who died in his place. The actual Iron Fist had been trapped in another dimension called K’un-Zi by Master Khan. He managed to escape with the help of his friends Luke Cage, Colleen Wing, Spider-Man,
and Doctor Strange. He reunited with Misty, and they resumed their relationship.

Misty supported Iron Fist in his quest to reclaim his legacy as the Immortal Iron Fist, the protector of K’un-Lun and the wielder of the chi of Shou-Lao the Undying. She learned that Iron Fist was not the only one who possessed the power of the Iron Fist, but one of many who had inherited it throughout history. She also discovered that K’un-Lun was one of seven mystical cities that existed in different dimensions, each with immortal weapons and champions. She accompanied Iron Fist to the Heart of Heaven, where he participated in a tournament against the other immortal weapons. She also helped him fight against the Steel Phoenix, a rogue Iron Fist who wanted to destroy K’un-Lun and its people.

Misty became pregnant with Iron Fist’s child, but she suffered a miscarriage due to a plot by the Crane Mother, the ruler of one of the seven cities. She was heartbroken but did not give up on her love for Iron Fist. They eventually got engaged and planned to get married.

Misty’s life took another turn when she was recruited by Valkyrie, the Asgardian warrior and chooser of the slain, to join a new team of female heroes called the Valkyrior. Odin had tasked Valkyrie to find new valkyries to replace the ones who had fallen in battle. She chose Misty as one of her candidates, along with Dani Moonstar, Hippolyta, Annabelle Riggs, Elsa Bloodstone, Clea, and Ren Kimura.

The Valkyrior faced many dangers and enemies, such as Caroline Le Fay, the daughter of Morgan Le Fay and Doctor Doom; the Doom Maidens, a group of corrupted Valkyries who served Hela; and Thanos’ Black Order, who invaded Earth during the Infinity event. Misty proved herself to be a worthy team member, using her bionic arm and detective skills to aid her allies. She also developed a friendship with Annabelle Riggs, a lesbian archaeologist who had a crush on Valkyrie.

Misty’s latest adventure involved teaming up with Black Panther, Luke Cage, Storm, and Manifold to form a new team called the Crew. They came together to investigate a mysterious death in Harlem, which led them to uncover a conspiracy involving a secret society called the 354th Street Serpents. They also discovered that Harlem had a hidden history of black heroes and activists who had fought for justice and freedom for their community.

The Crew faced opposition from the Serpents and the authorities, who tried to silence and discredit them. They also had to deal with their issues and conflicts, such as Misty’s strained relationship with Iron Fist, who had left her after learning that she had lied to him about being pregnant again. Misty eventually reconciled with Iron Fist and decided to give their relationship another chance.
