1969 Doctor Spectrum AKA Dr. Kinji Obatu

Doctor Spectrum is a name that has been used by several characters in the Marvel Universe, but the first one to bear this title was Dr. Kinji Obatu, a Ugandan politician who became a supervillain and a member of the Squadron Sinister.

Dr. Kinji Obatu was the finance minister of Uganda, but he had a secret agenda of overthrowing the government and becoming the dictator of his country. He was also involved in various crimes and corruption schemes. His life changed when he was approached by the Grandmaster, an ancient and powerful cosmic being who was obsessed with playing games. The Grandmaster offered Obatu a Power Prism, a mysterious device that could grant him incredible powers, in exchange for his participation in a contest against the Avengers, Earth’s mightiest heroes. Obatu accepted the offer and became Doctor Spectrum, the counterpart of Doctor Spectrum from the Squadron Supreme, another team of superheroes from a parallel world. The Grandmaster created the Squadron Sinister as his pawns to fight against Kang the Conqueror, another cosmic gamester who had chosen the Avengers as his champions.

Doctor Spectrum’s powers came from the Power Prism, which was actually a living being named Krimonn, a Skrull who had been transformed into a prism as a punishment for trying to usurp the Skrull Emperor. The Power Prism bonded with Obatu’s nervous system and allowed him to manipulate energy in various ways. Some of his abilities included:

– Creating solid constructs of any shape and size from energy, such as weapons, shields, cages, etc.
– Absorbing and projecting energy blasts of different types and intensities
– Flying at high speeds and levitating objects
– Enhancing his physical strength and durability
– Creating illusions and holograms
– Controlling minds and emotions
– Sensing energy sources and tracking targets
– Altering his appearance and disguising himself
– Communicating telepathically with Krimonn

Apart from the Power Prism, Doctor Spectrum also used some special equipment to enhance his powers or to achieve his goals. Some of these items were:

– A costume that was resistant to heat and radiation
– A pair of goggles that protected his eyes from bright flashes and allowed him to see in different spectra
– A wristwatch that contained a miniature version of the Power Prism that he could activate in case of emergency
– A jetpack that enabled him to fly faster and farther
– A laser pistol that he used as a backup weapon
