1963 - Gabe Jones - Howling Commandos

Gabriel “Gabe” Jones is a fictional character who appeared in Marvel comics as one of the original members of the Howling Commandos, an elite combat squad led by Nick Fury during World War II. He was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist and co-plotter Jack Kirby and made his first appearance in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 (May 1963). He was one of the first African-American characters in mainstream comics, although he was mistakenly colored as white on the cover of his debut issue due to an error by the engraving company. He was known for blowing his horn to shock enemies when he and his teammates charged into battle.

Gabe Jones continued to serve under Nick Fury in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., the international espionage organization. He was also part of the Godzilla Squad, a branch of S.H.I.E.L.D. that dealt with the giant lizard that terrorized parts of the world for some time. He remained loyal to Nick Fury even after the android Deltite infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. and played a key role in re-establishing the organization as a more focused operation. He also assisted Nick Fury and his Secret Warriors team in their fight against Hydra, where he was seemingly killed in action by the Gorgon.

Gabe Jones was not only a brave and skilled soldier but also a historical figure who broke racial barriers in comics and in the fictional Marvel universe. He was part of an integrated unit at a time when the U.S. Armed Forces were segregated, and he fought alongside heroes such as Captain America, Iron Man, and the Hulk. He was also a jazz musician who expressed his love for music even in the midst of war. He was a loyal friend and ally to Nick Fury and a respected member of the Howling Commandos and S.H.I.E.L.D.
