1973 - Brother Voodoo AKA Jericho Drumm

1973 - Brother Voodoo debut issue

Brother Voodoo, whose real name is Jericho Drumm, was created by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and John Romita Sr. He first appeared in Strange Tales #169 (September 1973) as a character try-out. He starred in his own feature in Strange Tales #169-173, and then in a backup feature in Tales of the Zombie #6 and #10. He was drawn by Gene Colan, who gave him a distinctive look with a white streak in his hair and a ‘V’ symbol on his forehead.

Jericho Drumm was born and raised in a Haitian village, along with his twin brother Daniel. While Daniel stayed and became a local houngan (voodoo priest), Jericho moved to America and became a successful psychologist. He returned to Haiti when he learned that his brother was dying from a curse placed by a rival sorcerer named Damballah. Before he died, Daniel asked Jericho to take his place as the houngan and protect the village from Damballah. Jericho agreed and underwent a ritual that transferred Daniel’s spirit into his own body, giving him the power to communicate with the loa (voodoo spirits) and command living things.

As Brother Voodoo, Jericho fought against Damballah and other supernatural threats, such as zombies, vampires, werewolves, and demons. He also teamed up with other heroes like Spider-Man, Moon Knight, Black Panther, Blade, Daredevil, and Doctor Strange. He became known as the Houngan Supreme, the master of voodoo magic in the Marvel universe.

One of the most important storylines for Brother Voodoo was when he became the new Sorcerer Supreme, replacing Doctor Strange who had lost his title for using dark magic. This happened in The New Avengers #53 (July 2009), where he was chosen by the Eye of Agamotto as the most worthy candidate. He changed his name to Doctor Voodoo and joined the New Avengers to fight against Dormammu, who wanted to challenge him for the position. He also acquired the Cloak of Levitation and the Books of Knowledge from Doctor Strange.

As Doctor Voodoo, Jericho faced many dangers and enemies, such as Agamotto himself, who tried to reclaim his power and destroy the world. Jericho sacrificed himself to stop Agamotto by detonating all the mystical energy he had accumulated. He died as a hero, but his spirit remained in contact with his brother Daniel.

Jericho was later resurrected by Doctor Doom, who had been inverted by a spell and became a benevolent ruler of Latveria. He joined the Avengers Unity Division, a team of Avengers and X-Men who worked together to promote peace and cooperation. He also had to deal with his brother Daniel, who had been corrupted by the Hand and became an evil zombie lord. Jericho managed to free him from their influence and restore their bond.

More recently, Jericho has become the headmaster of the Strange Academy, a school for young magic users founded by Doctor Strange. He teaches them how to use their powers responsibly and safely, while also protecting them from various threats.

Brother Voodoo has also appeared in other media besides comics. He was featured in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble, voiced by Phil LaMarr. He also had a cameo appearance in the video game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, voiced by Dave Fennoy. He is rumored to appear in the upcoming live-action movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, played by Djimon Hounsou.
