1980 – Cyborg AKA Victor Stone

1980 Cyborg AKA Victor Stone

Cyborg was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, and first appeared in an insert preview in DC Comics Presents #26 (October 1980). He was inspired by Marvel Comics’ character Deathlok, who was also a cyborg superhero. Wolfman and Pérez wanted to create a character who would appeal to young readers and reflect the diversity of the modern world. They also wanted to explore the themes of identity, alienation, and humanity in a sci-fi context.

Victor Stone was the son of Silas and Elinore Stone, two brilliant scientists who worked at S.T.A.R. Labs. They used Victor as a test subject for various intelligence enhancement projects, which made him resentful of his parents. He befriended a young delinquent named Ron Evers, who led him into trouble with the law. Victor also pursued his passion for athletics, despite his parents’ disapproval.

Victor’s life changed dramatically when he was caught in a terrible accident at S.T.A.R. Labs. A rogue experiment unleashed an interdimensional monster that killed Elinore and severely injured Victor. Silas managed to save his son’s life by using experimental technology to replace most of his body parts with cybernetic ones. Victor became Cyborg, a powerful hybrid of man and machine.

Cyborg initially struggled with his new condition, feeling like a freak and an outcast. He blamed his father for his fate and isolated himself from society. He eventually found a new family in the Teen Titans, a group of young superheroes led by Robin (Dick Grayson). Cyborg became one of the founding members of the team, along with Raven, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Kid Flash (Wally West). He also formed a close bond with Terra, a troubled girl with earth manipulation powers.

Cyborg proved to be a valuable asset to the Teen Titans, using his enhanced strength, durability, speed, flight, sensors, weapons, computer interfacing, nano-regeneration, shapeshifting, and boom tube creation abilities to fight various threats. He also displayed a genius-level intellect and a knack for inventing and repairing gadgets. He was loyal, brave, compassionate, and humorous, often acting as the heart and soul of the team.

Cyborg faced many challenges and enemies throughout his tenure as a Teen Titan. He battled against Deathstroke (Slade Wilson), Brother Blood (Sebastian Blood), Trigon (Raven’s father), H.I.V.E., Fearsome Five, Wildebeest Society, Titans East, Titans West, Titans Tomorrow, Black Lantern Corps (during Blackest Night), Crime Syndicate (during Forever Evil), Darkseid (during Dark Nights: Metal), among others. He also dealt with personal issues such as his relationship with his father (who died and was resurrected several times), his friendship with Ron Evers (who became a cyborg terrorist), his romance with Sarah Simms (a teacher for disabled children), his rivalry with Fixit (a sentient computer virus), his betrayal by Terra (who was working for Deathstroke), his infection by Technis (a cosmic entity that turned him into Cyberion), his transformation into Omegadrome (a living weapon of mass destruction), his death and rebirth (during Flashpoint), and his struggle to maintain his humanity.

Cyborg also had many adventures outside of the Teen Titans. He joined other teams such as the Justice League (after the New 52 reboot in 2011), Doom Patrol (after being recruited by Niles Caulder), Justice League Odyssey (after being stranded in the Ghost Sector), Metal Men (after being fused with Platinum), among others. He also had solo missions where he faced foes such as Grid (a rogue AI that stole his cybernetics), Variant (a female clone of himself), Anomaly (a twisted version of himself from another dimension), Kilg%re (a techno-organic virus that infected him), among others.

Cyborg has appeared in various media outside of comics as well. He made his live-action debut in the television series Smallville (2006-2010), portrayed by Lee Thompson Young. He also appeared in the DC Extended Universe films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017), and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), portrayed by Ray Fisher. He also starred in the television series Doom Patrol (2019-present) and Titans (2021-present), portrayed by Joivan Wade. In animated media, he was voiced by Khary Payton in Teen Titans (2003-2006), Teen Titans Go! (2013-present), Young Justice (2010-present), Lego DC Comics Super Heroes, DC Super Hero Girls, and various DC animated films. He was also voiced by Shemar Moore in Justice League: War (2014) and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015), and by Zeno Robinson in Justice League Action (2016-2018).

Cyborg is a fascinating character who has evolved from a troubled teenager to a respected hero. He is a symbol of resilience, courage, and hope, as well as a representation of the diversity and complexity of the modern world. He is a half-man, half-machine hero who is more than the sum of his parts.
