1990 – Rage AKA Elvin Daryl Holiday

1990 - Rage AKA Elvin Daryl Holiday debut

Rage’s origin story begins when he was a 13-year-old boy living with his grandmother in Harlem. He was visiting another neighborhood to trade some comic books when he was attacked by a gang of racist bullies. He escaped by hiding in the polluted waters of Newtown Creek, where he was exposed to toxic waste dumped by Fisk Biochem. The chemicals caused him to grow into a muscular adult body with enhanced strength and durability. Inspired by his grandmother, who was a devout Christian, he decided to use his powers for good and became a vigilante named Rage. He wore a ski mask and a leather outfit as his costume.

Rage soon encountered the Avengers and demanded to join them, criticizing them for their lack of diversity. He fought alongside them in several missions, facing foes such as Doctor Doom, the Collector and Morgan Le Fay. He was accepted as a probationary member, but his true age was revealed when he teamed up with the New Warriors against the Hate-Monger and the Sons of the Serpent, two groups of racist villains. Captain America demoted him to trainee status, but he befriended the New Warriors and helped them steal an Avengers Quinjet for an emergency. He was expelled from the Avengers for this act and joined the New Warriors as a full member.

Rage formed a close friendship with Speedball, one of his teammates in the New Warriors. He also faced tragedy when his grandmother was killed by a street gang called the Poison Memories, who had a vendetta against the New Warriors. Rage killed the gang leader in revenge, but was cleared of murder charges by a judge. He became an orphan and was adopted by Andrew Chord, the legal guardian of Night Thrasher, another member of the New Warriors. He later left the team with Night Thrasher and mentored another group of super-powered youths called Psionex. He eventually rejoined the New Warriors, but they drifted apart as they pursued different goals.

Rage continued to be active as a superhero, occasionally assisting the Avengers and other heroes against threats such as A.I.M., Lord Templar and an insane Scarlet Witch. He also enrolled in a boarding school called Oatridge to continue his education. He later participated in the Civil War between superheroes over the Superhuman Registration Act. He sided with Captain America’s anti-registration faction and was arrested by Iron Man’s pro-registration forces. He was sent to Prison 42 in the Negative Zone, where he was attacked by other inmates and left in a coma.

Rage eventually recovered from his coma and joined Camp Hammond, a training facility for registered superheroes. He became part of a team called The Shadow Initiative, led by War Machine. He fought against Skrulls during their invasion of Earth and against Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers during their siege of Asgard. He also clashed with Americops, a private police force that used excessive force against minorities. He was beaten by them and left for dead in a dumpster. He survived and sought justice for their crimes.

Rage’s most recent appearance was during the Annihilation – Scourge event, where he helped Nova and other cosmic heroes fight against an interdimensional threat called the Cancerverse. He sacrificed himself to destroy a portal that was unleashing hordes of monsters on Earth.

Rage is one of Marvel’s most underrated characters, who has shown courage, loyalty and determination throughout his career. He has also faced racism, violence and loss with dignity and faith. He is a role model for young readers who aspire to be heroes.
