1983 – Axe AKA Jerome Hamilton

1983 - Axe debut

Axe, also known as Jerome Hamilton, is a mutant able to manipulate sound waves, creating powerful sonic blasts and vibrations. He first appeared in 1983 in the pages of Dazzler #30 and has since been involved in some critical storylines and media appearances.

Axe was born to a wealthy and influential family in Baltimore, Maryland. His father, James Hamilton, was a senator and a presidential candidate, while his mother, Elizabeth Hamilton, was a socialite and philanthropist. Axe had a privileged upbringing but felt pressured to live up to his parent’s expectations. He was sent to the best schools and groomed for a political career, but he secretly resented his father’s authoritarian and conservative views.

Axe’s mutant powers manifested as a teenager during a heated argument with his father. He accidentally unleashed a sonic blast that shattered the windows of their mansion and knocked his father unconscious. Horrified by what he had done, Axe ran away from home and became a fugitive. He wandered the streets of Baltimore, using his powers to rob and intimidate people. He also developed a drug addiction and a violent temper.

Axe’s life changed when he met the mutant singer and superheroine Dazzler. She was performing at a nightclub in Baltimore when Axe attacked her with his sonic blasts. Dazzler fought back with her light powers, and the two engaged in a fierce battle that destroyed the club. Dazzler managed to subdue Axe and convinced him to seek help at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Axe agreed, hoping to find a place where he could belong.

At Xavier’s School, Axe met Professor X and the X-Men, who welcomed him and offered him training and guidance. Axe also befriended other young mutants, such as Kitty Pryde, Rogue, and Nightcrawler. He adopted the codename Axe and joined the New Mutants, a team of teenage superheroes led by Professor X. Axe soon proved himself to be a valuable member of the group, using his sonic powers to fight against various enemies, such as Magneto, the Hellfire Club and the Brood.

However, Axe also struggled with his demons. He had difficulty controlling his anger and addiction, often clashing with his teammates and mentors. He also felt guilty for abandoning his family and for hurting his father. He tried to contact his parents several times, but they refused to acknowledge him or accept his mutant status. They even publicly disowned him, claiming he was an impostor and terrorist.

One of the most tragic moments in Axe’s comic book history occurred in New Mutants #50, when he learned that an anti-mutant extremist group had assassinated his father called the Purifiers. Axe was devastated by the news and blamed himself for his father’s death. He decided to leave the New Mutants and seek revenge against the Purifiers. He tracked them down to their headquarters in Washington, DC, where he confronted their leader, Reverend William Stryker.

Axe attacked Stryker with his sonic blasts, but Stryker revealed that he had anticipated his arrival and prepared a trap. Stryker activated a device that amplified Axe’s powers beyond his control, causing him to emit a scream that shattered every glass object in the city and killed thousands of people. Stryker then shot Axe in the head, leaving him for dead.

However, Axe survived the gunshot wound thanks to his mutant healing factor. Dazzler found him, who had followed him to Washington DC after learning about his father’s assassination. Dazzler took Axe to a hospital, where he recovered from his injuries. However, he also suffered from severe trauma and guilt for causing so much death and destruction. He blamed himself for everything that had happened and wished he had never been born.

Axe’s comic book history took a surprising turn in 2022 when he became involved in the A.X.E.: Judgment Day crossover event. This event featured the conflict between the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Eternals over the discovery of the mutant resurrection protocols and the judgment of the Celestials. Axe played a vital role in this event, as he was revealed to be an Eternal.

According to Eternals (Vol. 5) #12, Axe was one of the original Eternals created by the Celestials millions of years ago on Earth. His real name was Uranos (not to be confused with another Eternal with the same name), and he was one of the leaders of the Uranian Eternals. This faction rebelled against the Earth Eternals and left the planet to colonize Uranus. However, Uranos and his followers were attacked by the Kree, an alien race seeking to claim Uranus. Uranos was captured by the Kree and experimented on, resulting in his memory loss and mutation.

Uranos escaped from the Kree and returned to Earth, where he assumed the identity of Jerome Hamilton and lived as a human for thousands of years. He was unaware of his true nature and origin until he was awakened by the Eternals’ leader, Druig, who sought to recruit him for his plan to overthrow the X-Men and the Avengers. Druig restored Uranos’ memories and powers and gave him a new codename: Axe.

Axe joined Druig and his allies, such as Hex, Jack of Knives, and Progenitor, in attacking Krakoa, the mutant nation. Axe used his sonic powers to disrupt the mutant resurrection protocols and to kill several X-Men, such as Cyclops, Storm, and Wolverine. He also confronted Dazzler, who tried to reason with him and remind him of their past relationship. However, Axe rejected Dazzler and claimed he had no feelings for her or anyone else. He said he only served Druig and the Eternals and would not stop until all mutants were extinct.

Axe’s comic book history reached its climax in A.X.E.: Judgment Day Omega #1 when he faced off against Thor, the god of thunder and an Avenger. Thor challenged Axe to a duel, wielding his hammer Mjolnir against Axe’s sonic Axe. The two fought fiercely, unleashing their full power against each other. However, Thor proved more robust and worthy than Axe and managed to strike him down with a mighty blow.

As Axe lay dying on the ground, he had a moment of clarity and regret. He realized he had wasted his life on hatred and violence and betrayed his friends and authentic self. He apologized to Dazzler, who had rushed to his side, and asked her to forgive him. He also asked her to tell his parents that he loved them, even though they had rejected him. He then closed his eyes and died peacefully.

Axe’s comic book history is tragic and complex, full of twists and turns. He was a character who had great potential but also significant flaws. He was a hero who became a villain, but also a villain who redeemed himself in the end. He was a mutant who was also an Eternal and an Eternal who was also a human. He was a son, a lover, a friend, and an enemy. He was Axe.
