1987 – Pathway AKA Laura Dean

1987 - Pathway AKA Laura Dean debut

Pathway was born as Laura Dean, one of the twin daughters of metaphoric parents who lived in Canada. Her parents decided to have her sister’s fetus destroyed because they detected signs of mutation. However, Laura used her latent power to protect her sister by sending her to another dimension, later known as Liveworld. Laura grew up as an autistic and withdrawn child who her parents sent to the New Life Clinic, a facility run by the mad scientist Scramble. She escaped from the clinic but was captured by Bedlam, a villain who forced her to join his team of Derangers. During a fight with Alpha Flight, Canada’s premier superhero team, Laura switched places with her sister, whom she called Goblyn. Alpha Flight defeated Bedlam and took Laura and Goblyn under their care. They joined Beta Flight, the junior division of Alpha Flight, under the mistaken belief that they were the same person.

Pathway has the superhuman psionic ability to open portals to other dimensions. She can mentally close any interdimensional portal that she has used. She can also make portals to travel worldwide and has the skill level to open outlets underneath people, making her opponents fall into them. She can also create portals to empty pocket dimensions. Her skill level is so great that Dr. Strange nearly dies trying to probe the interdimensional crossroads to find her with no luck.

Pathway’s Storylines

Pathway and Goblyn were involved in many Alpha Flight and Beta Flight adventures. They traveled to Liveworld and encountered the Dreamqueen, a powerful entity who wanted to conquer Earth. They helped Talisman find Northstar, who Loki kidnaped. They fought against the Hardliners, a group of anti-mutant extremists who attacked Department H, the government agency that funded Alpha Flight. They also faced Wild Child, a former teammate who went berserk and injured them severely. Laura sent Goblyn to Liveworld for safety but had to return with Beta Flight to rescue her.

Pathway’s family history is tragic and complicated. Her parents were hateful and abusive towards her and her sister because of their mutant status. Her sister Goblyn was also a mutant with a feral appearance and personality. She could only communicate with Laura telepathically and was often violent and unpredictable. However, she also had a gentle side and cared deeply for Laura. The two sisters had a strong bond and often switched places through their portals. They also befriended Persuasion, another mutant girl who was the daughter of Purple Man, a mind-controlling villain. Persuasion became like a sister to them, and they lived together for a while after Alpha Flight disbanded.

Pathway has not appeared in any media outside of comics yet. She is a relatively obscure character without being featured in any animated series or movies based on Marvel properties. However, she has appeared in comic books not part of the main Marvel continuity, such as Ultimate X-Men/X-Men: The Ultimate Guide and Wolverine: First Class. She also had a cameo appearance in X-Men: The End, which depicted one possible future for the X-Men and their allies.
