1973 - Erik Killmonger AKA N'Jadaka

Killmonger was born as N’Jadaka in a small village in Wakanda, a hidden and technologically advanced African nation with a rare vibranium metal. When he was a child, his village was attacked by Ulysses Klaw, a mercenary who wanted to steal vibranium for his nefarious purposes. N’Jadaka’s father was forced to help Klaw, but he was killed along with his wife during the raid. N’Jadaka was kidnapped by Klaw and taken to America, where he escaped and changed his name to Erik Killmonger.

Killmonger grew up in Harlem, New York, where he studied engineering and business at MIT. He harbored a deep hatred for Wakanda’s royal family, especially King T’Chaka, whom he blamed for his parents’ deaths and exile. He also despised the Black Panther, the hereditary title and mantle of Wakanda’s ruler and protector. He believed that Wakanda should be more aggressive and assertive in the world and that he was the rightful heir to the throne.

Killmonger contacted T’Chaka’s son and successor, T’Challa, when he became the new Black Panther and joined the Avengers. He pretended to be a loyal Wakandan who wanted to return to his homeland, but he had a sinister plan to overthrow T’Challa and take over Wakanda. He allied himself with various enemies of Wakanda, such as Baron Macabre, King Cadaver, Malice, and Venom. He also used a mysterious Resurrection Altar to create superhuman followers like Sombre, Lord Karnaj, and Salamander K’ruel.

Killmonger challenged T’Challa to ritual combat for the right to rule Wakanda several times. He proved a formidable opponent, as he was a master martial artist, tactician, inventor, and strategist. He also possessed enhanced strength, speed, durability, and healing thanks to a synthetic version of the Heart-Shaped Herb, a plant that grants the Black Panther his powers. He even managed to defeat T’Challa on some occasions and claim the title of Black Panther.

However, Killmonger’s reigns were always short-lived and unstable. He faced resistance from T’Challa’s allies, such as the Dora Milaje (Wakanda’s elite female warriors), Shuri (T’Challa’s sister), Storm (T’Challa’s wife), and the White Tiger (a former NYPD officer who inherited a Black Panther suit). He also faced opposition from other factions within Wakanda, such as the Jabari tribe (led by M’Baku, also known as Man-Ape) and the Desturi (a radical group that wanted to restore Wakanda’s isolationism). Moreover, he faced threats from outside forces, such as Doctor Doom (who invaded Wakanda to steal its vibranium) and Thanos (who sought to destroy half of all life in the universe).

Killmonger also met his demise several times during his conflicts with T’Challa. He was killed by Monica Lynne (T’Challa’s former lover), by M’Baku (who snapped his neck), by T’Challa himself (who stabbed him with a dagger), and by Black Widow (who shot him with a bullet laced with poison). However, he always found a way to return from the dead through resurrection technology or mystical means.

Killmonger’s comic book history is rich and complex. He is not just a simple villain who wants power and revenge. He is also a tragic figure who lost everything at a young age and became corrupted by his anger and ambition. He is also a visionary who wants to change Wakanda for what he believes is the better. He is also a formidable adversary who challenges T’Challa’s ideals and morals.

Killmonger has also appeared in other media besides comics. He was featured in animated shows such as Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Black Panther: The Animated Series. Michael B. Jordan also portrayed him in the 2018 live-action film Black Panther, where he was praised for being one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe villains.
