He witnessed a local houngan (a voodoo priest) cure his father’s illness with magic. Fascinated by voodoo, Droo devoted himself to learning ancient art and became a master in two years. However, unlike his teachers, Droo combined voodoo with modern technology, using an electronic needle stylus and a computerized voodoo doll to inflict pain and harm on his enemies.

Droo adopted Houngan and joined the Brotherhood of Evil, a supervillain group led by the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. He respected the Brain’s leadership abilities and followed him loyally. Houngan first encountered the New Teen Titans in 1981, when the Brotherhood tried to overthrow the government of Zandia, a small European country that harbored criminals.
