Chunk is a fictional character who first appeared in DC Comics The Flash (vol. 2) #9 in February 1988. Writer Mike Baron and artist Jackson Guice created him. Chunk is the alter ego of Chester P. Runk, a genius physicist, and engineer who accidentally merged with a matter-transmitting machine and became a human black hole.
Chester P. Runk was a child prodigy and an MIT graduate with severe psychological problems. He developed a device to transport matter to a pocket dimension called “the Void.” However, due to his lack of safety precautions, the machine imploded and became part of his body during his first test.
The accident gave him super-strength and resilience and the ability to teleport anywhere he wished on Earth and off. He also accessed the Void, where he could send or retrieve objects and people. However, he also had to consume 47 times his weight in a superdense matter like diamonds, gold, or uranium to keep the machine from eating or collapsing him to a lower dimension.
Chunk became a jewelry thief, stealing precious stones and metals to feed his hunger. He also sent many people to the Void out of anger, revenge, or annoyance. Some of them were innocent bystanders, while others were criminals or sadists. The Void was a barren wasteland populated by strange prehistoric creatures, where the survivors had to struggle for survival.
Chunk came to the attention of Wally West, the third Flash, who was struggling with his issues at the time. Wally confronted Chunk several times, trying to stop his crime spree and rescue his victims from the Void. During their second fight, Chunk brought Wally to the Void, where he joined a group of decent-minded survivors.
Wally convinced Chunk that he could be hailed as a scientific hero if he just sent all his victims back to Earth and turned himself in. Chunk agreed and used his power to return everyone he had sent to the Void. He also surrendered to the authorities and was sent to a psychiatric hospital.
Chunk later became an ally and friend of Wally, helping him with his scientific problems and occasionally joining him on his adventures. He also became a member of the Shadow Fighters, a team of heroes assembled by Amanda Waller to fight Eclipso.
Chunk has not appeared much outside of comics but in the animated Justice League Unlimited episode “Flash and Substance.” He was seen as one of the patrons at the Flash Museum.
Chunk also appeared in the live-action series The Flash, starting in the sixth season. Brandon McKnight portrayed him as a conspiracy theorist and hacker who helped Team Flash against Bloodwork and Black Hole. He later discovered that he had metahuman powers that allowed him to create black holes.
## Family History
Not much is known about Chunk’s family history, as he had no relatives when he first appeared. However, it was revealed that he had an ancestor named Phineas P. Runk, a scientist and inventor in the 19th century. Phineas created the Cosmic Treadmill, which Barry Allen and Wally West later used to travel through time.
Phineas also had a rivalry with another scientist named Silas Stone, the ancestor of Victor Stone/Cyborg. Phineas and Silas competed for the affection of a woman named Sarah Charles, who was the ancestor of Sarah Charles-Stone, Cyborg’s girlfriend.
