off Adder debuted in Captain America #337 (January 1988), created by writer Mark Gruenwald and artist Tom Morgan. He was recruited by the Viper, a terrorist leader who wanted to take over the Serpent Society, a group of snake-themed criminals. Along with Black Racer, Copperhead, and Fer-de-Lance, Puff Adder infiltrated the Society and betrayed them when Viper made her move. However, they were opposed by Captain America and his allies, as well as the Cobra, the original leader of the Society. Puff Adder decided to stay with the Society when Cobra regained his leadership.
Puff Adder can enlarge, or “puff up,” his body to make himself more robust and damage-resistant. He can also release venomous gas from his mouth that paralyzes or kills his enemies. He is usually armed with a gun and wears a costume that resembles a puff adder snake.
Puff Adder has been involved in many of the Serpent Society’s activities, such as stealing ancient artifacts for a cult leader, kidnapping Diamondback for a trial by the Society, and fighting against various heroes like the X-Men, Gambit, Iron Man, and Nighthawk. He also briefly joined Doctor Octopus’s version of the Masters of Evil, but turned against him when they faced their monstrous doppelgangers created by Magus.
Puff Adder has had romantic relationships with some of his teammates, such as Anaconda and Princess Python. He once fought with Deathlok over Princess Python’s affections. He also has a family history that is not well-known. According to one source, he is the son of an abusive father who beat him and his mother. He ran away from home and joined a circus, where he discovered his mutant powers.
Puff Adder is not a very popular or prominent character in Marvel comics but has appeared in other media. He was featured in the 1994 Spider-Man animated series, voiced by Gregg Berger. He was also part of a Marvel Legends action figure wave in 2023, along with other members of the Serpent Society.
