1990 – Sunshine Superman

1990 - Sunshine Superman Pre-Crisis

Sunshine Superman is a superhero who lives in a parallel world called Dreamworld or Earth 47, depending on the continuity. He is a member of the Love Syndicate, a group of heroes inspired by the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s. His teammates include Speed Freak, a female version of the Flash, Magic Lantern, a hippie version of Green Lantern, Shooting Star, Brother Power the Geek, and Prez Rickard.

Sunshine Superman first appeared in Animal Man #23 (May 1990), created by Grant Morrison and Chaz Truog. He was one of the many alternate versions of Superman who manifested from the mask of Psycho-Pirate, a villain who remembered the Crisis on Infinite Earths. This story erased many parallel worlds from existence. Sunshine Superman was later erased from reality as well.

However, he was reborn when Mister Mind, a giant worm-like creature, attacked the Multiverse in 52 (2006-2007), a series that revealed that 52 parallel worlds still existed. Sunshine Superman joined the Supermen of the Multiverse, a team of heroes who defended their worlds from various threats. He was seen again in Final Crisis (2008-2009), another series by Grant Morrison that featured a cosmic war between good and evil.

Sunshine Superman is named after a song by Donovan, a Scottish folk singer who popularized psychedelic music in the 1960s. The song was released in 1966 and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. The song also references Green Lantern and Superman in its lyrics.

Sunshine Superman has not appeared in any other media besides comics. However, he has been referenced or parodied in some works. For example, in DC’s Very Merry Multiverse #1 (2020), a holiday-themed anthology, there is a story called “Superman vs. Father Christmas,” where Superman meets an alternate version of himself who is Santa Claus. The story is set on Earth 45, similar to Earth 47, but with more Christmas elements. The Santa Claus version of Superman is called “Sunshine Santa.”
